Hey, Folks! It's Little, here. So today I saw the Fish Lady spreading around piles of brown fluffy stuff, and I asked her what it was.
"Mulch!" she said cheerfully, making sure not to get any in our pond.
"What's it made of?" I asked.
"Shredded bark, mainly."
"What's it for?"
"Mulch does a few things," she told us, blinking fast. "For one, it just blew up and got a little bit in my eye, just a minute. . . Okay it's gone. Secondly, it keeps the weeds down -- weed seeds that touch the soil don't get enough sunlight if they're covered with a few inches of mulch, so they don't grow. Third, it keeps moisture in the soil -- that means less watering so more time spent doing vital things like greening brooklyn, preventing water waste, and having ice cream. Fourth, it improves the soil -- when it decomposes, it adds nutrients to the dirt, giving plants and earthworms lots of good food. And fifth, it looks nice."
"I like it," Snoop said, and I had to agree. It sounded good all around!
